SOPHOMORES

During their second year at Central Catholic, students will complete:

First Semester

  • 7 Hours in the area of engagement: Homelessness and Hunger

  • 3 Hours of solidarity work / awareness-raising

  • Service reflection in their theology class

Second Semester

  • 7 Hours in the area of engagement:

  • Attend Central State of Mind*

  • 3 Hours of solidarity work / awareness-raising

  • Service reflection in theology class

Each Sophomore will be reintroduced to the service program at the start of their year. This reintroduction will cover the areas of engagement and how they can work toward completing their service each year leading toward graduation.

The first semester they will get a chance to service through the area of engagement of Houselessness & Hunger. This area provides opportunities to serve people with some of the greatest needs in our community.  Students can serve with organizations like Saint Vincent de Paul, Blanchet House, Oregon Food Bank, and many more.

The second semester students will build on their developing excitement for service by serving in the area of engagement of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & liberation. This area provides opportunities for students to engage with organizations that work to bring great dignity to people who have historically lived on constructed margins of society.

Each semester, students will engage in 3 hours of solidarity work / awareness-raising. This can take several forms. It can be going to and then reflecting upon a community engagement activity like a social justice march or fair; a cultural or religious event outside of their own tradition; or watching a documentary about a social-justice issue. Ideally the solidarity / awareness-raising work will relate to the service they do that semester (though it does not have to).

*Attending Central State of Mind is a requirement of all Central Catholic students.  If a student is unable to attend, they must make up those days with either 3 hours per day missed (6 hours if both days were missed) of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Liberation service. If a student is unable to participate in Central State of Mind, those hours will have to be earned outside of school hours.  Students also can complete DEI&L assignments created by the Director of Equity & Inclusion to make up for the days missed of Central State of Mind.

Sophomore Service Plan

During their sophomore year, students will be focusing on completing 7 hours in each of the three of the areas of engagement (Houselessness & Hunger; Health, Education, & Faith Formation; & Environmental Stewardship). *Students will need to complete a minimum of 13 hours in the area of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Liberation. These amounts are cumulative from both Freshman and Sophomore years.

Each student will need to complete at least 10 hours of service during 1st semester sophomore year and 16 hours during the second semester sophomore year. Students should plan out their service hours for the year so that they can meet the requirements in each of the areas of engagement. By the end of sophomore year each student will need to have completed a minimum of 7 hours in each area of engagement with an additional 6 hours in the area of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Liberation.

Central State of Mind
*6 additional hours of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Liberation will be earned through attending Central State of Mind each year. If a student is unable to participate in the Central State of Mind, those hours will have to be earned through other opportunities students will need to find for themselves in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, & liberation. Therefore, by the end of sophomore year students will have earned a minimum of 13 total hours in the area of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Liberation.
