Athletic Health and Injury Protocol

What is an Athletic Trainer?

An Athletic Trainer is a certified healthcare professional who specializes in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. At Central Catholic, our Athletic Trainer plays a vital role in supporting student-athletes by providing on-site care, guiding recovery, and ensuring a safe return to play.

Concussion Return-to-Play Protocol

Following a concussion, student-athletes must complete a step-by-step return-to-play progression under the supervision of the school’s Athletic Trainer. Each stage must be completed without symptoms before advancing to the next:

  1. Return to Regular Activities
Gradual return to daily routines such as school and light cognitive activity.
  2. Light Aerobic Activity
5–10 minutes of light exercise (walking, stationary biking, or light jogging). No resistance training.
  3. Moderate Activity
Increased intensity, including moderate jogging or brief running, with limited head and body movement.
  4. Heavy, Non-Contact Activity
High-intensity exercise (sprinting, intense cycling) and sport-specific drills without contact.
  5. Practice & Full Contact
Participation in controlled, full-contact practice with medical clearance.
  6. Return to Competition
    Full clearance for game play.

*Student-athletes will only progress through each stage with approval from the Athletic Trainer. The health and safety of our students is always our top priority.

About Ms. Darci

I have been working for Providence Health & Services as the Athletic Trainer at Central Catholic High School since the fall of 2024. I received my bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at the University of North Dakota in 2016. Before working for Providence, I wore many hats, including: Industrial Athletic Trainer, CNA, rehab aid, receptionist, CPR & First Aid Instructor, and rural EMT.

Athletics is a huge passion of mine, having been a four-sport athlete in high school- basketball, soccer, cross country, and track & field, and played rugby in college. I have empathy for my athletes, having been in similar shoes. I take pride in prevention and education on sports injuries, while promoting self-advocacy for my athletes. Knowledge is power, and I try to give my athletes the tools they need to help them perform to their fullest potential.

In my free time, I enjoy going on adventures with my dogs, outdoor activities, raising chickens, gardening, crafting, baking, and gaming.

Availability:

I can be found either on campus or at our new NE Complex; the location of where I will be is posted on my office door. Hours are 2:30 p.m.-end of practices

I have an open-door policy, so feel free to come on in anytime I am in my office!
