"Citizenship"
The last characteristic in our Core Value systems is Citizenship. Simply put this is doing things for the greater good of society. Looking out for others, doing what is expected of us as an individual with a selfless attitude.
When we combine all six of the traits: TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING and CITIZENSHIP, we have the ability to increase the quality of life for all people. These traits
will also help us be successful beyond our expectations. Internalize these traits; make them a part of who you are and who you want to be.
CITIZENSHIP
Do your share – (not letting others do all the work)
- Be a volunteer – help your school and community be better, cleaner and safer.
- Nothing should be prized more highly than the value of each day
- Protect the environment by conserving resources, reducing pollution, and cleaning up after yourself.
- Participate in making things better by voicing your opinions (appropriately), voting, serving on committees, reporting wrongdoing and paying taxes.
- Wisdom is knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your speech.
- Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. – John F. Kennedy
- Most people do only what they are required to do but successful people do a little more.
- Let everyone sweep in front of his own door, and the whole world will be clean .…..Goethe
- Humility is a strange thing – when you think you’ve gained it, you’ve lost it.
- The way to be happy is to make others happy.
- If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.
Respect Authority and Law – (the ability to show respect for the office although one may not agree with the letter of the law or those that hold the office.)
- A person of character plays by the rules and obeys those who have been given authority
- The vital social contract that makes a democracy work is the agreement that we will be governed by laws.
- In a democracy we deal with unwise or unpleasant rules by changing the rules, not by our standards of conduct.
- If we have not learned obedience to authority in the playpen, we will in the State Pen.
- Our country is in better condition when there are more whittlers than chiselers.
- Too many laws are passed, then bypassed.
- There is no liberty worth anything which is not liberty under law.
- There is too much talk about enforcing the laws and not enough said about obeying them.
- Where law ends tyranny begins.
- A man does not stumble over the law unless he tries to cross it.
- Laws are man’s guidelines, but, unfortunately, too many try to read between them.
- Laws are no stronger than the devotion to them by the people who live under them.
Plays by the rules – (the ability to act according to the laws.)
- The bridge you burn now may be the one you later have to cross.
- There is nothing wrong with starting at the bottom – unless you are learning to swim.
- The most difficult part of getting to the top of the ladder is getting through the crowd at the bottom.
- Ability will enable a man to go to the top but it takes character to keep him there.
- Walk with the wise and be wise; mix with the stupid and be misled.
- Everything comes to him who waits, if he works while he waits.
- Right behavior raises a people to honor; to do wrong is a disgrace to any nation.
- A well-rounded character is square in all his dealings.
- A good thing to remember and a better thing to do, is to work with the construction gang and not the wrecking crew.
- Goodwill can be achieved by many actions; it can be lost by one.
