Reverend Donald McHugh ’47 will celebrate his 50th Jubilee of Ordination this spring. Father McHugh was born in Portland, the fifth of six children of Helen and Bernard McHugh. He graduated from St. Agatha School in 1943 and from Central Catholic High School in 1947. He entered the Seminary at Mt. Angel and later St. Edward Seminary in Lacey, WA. Father was ordained on May 18, 1957. The parishes that Father served include St. Peter in Portland, Immaculate Conception in Stayton, and Our Lady of the Lake in Lake Oswego. He was commissioned a Colonel in the Army Reserve at Fort Polk in Louisiana.
Father McHugh returned to Central Catholic High School as a teacher, Prefect of Discipline, and Vice-Principal from 1958 – 1971.
Although retired, Father continues to celebrate the Monday morning Mass at St. Agatha. He resides at the McHugh family home which was built by his father, Bernard and uncle, Neil McHugh. A Mass and reception will be held in his honor at St. Agatha Church on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 5:00 p.m., the date and place of his first Mass 50 years ago.
Upon graduating from Central Catholic, Jack Bobzien ’49, enlisted in the Navy for four years. Afterwards, he attended the University of Portland where he received a B.A. in Education. He married Anita in 1958 and has five children. He got his master’s degree from the University of Oregon in 1968 and taught middle school in Portland for 30 years. He and Anita now live on a small farm raising peaches and Christmas trees.
J. Richard (Dick) Pizzo ’44 turned 80 in March and he and his wife Evelyn welcomed the birth of their fourth grandchild two days later. Dick retired 18 years ago after working as an educator at Lake Oswego H.S. and in the Oregon State System of Higher Education. They are now enjoying foreign travel, mushrooming, and active involvement in the Knights of Columbus.
Lyle Rogers ’47 wrote: “I am still working at my business, but not too hard. Sold the business to Bodan Sales Co. and still represent them at various accounts. I am in reasonable health, had a major stroke in 1990 - another one less severe in 1993 and still stumbling around today. Married 45 years to a wonderful young woman and we raised two daughters and one son with 5 grandchildren – 3 boys, 2 girls oldest 15 years and will be a sophomore in high school and very fine baseball pitcher, left handed, like his granddad. Been in Dallas since 1954 with short tenures in Houston, Texas; San Francisco, and Chicago with Crown Zellerbach for 13 years after release from Air Force. Then Brown Co. for 5 years and then in 1970 got into my own sales agency. Still supporting (not full time) the gentleman that bought the business and it has become even more successful.
Clair Kuppenbender ‘48 and his wife Patricia Imel of Portland celebrated 50 years of marriage with a cruise to Alaska in August and a surprise reception on the actual date of September 17, given by their children: Kim, Keith, Ken, Gary, Gene and Patsy. Clair and Pat were married September 17, 1955 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Portland.
