MUSIC
Charles Walsh
Charlie Walsh is thrilled to be the new music teacher at Central Catholic High School. He moved to Portland one year ago from Bellingham, WA where he taught K-8 music at Assumption Catholic Elementary School.
Charlie is originally from Louisville, KY and began his musical study at a young age. He played trumpet and sang in musicals throughout high school and attended Kenyon College from 1996-2000. At Kenyon he majored in music, performing on the trumpet, vocally and conducting numerous ensembles. After singing with numerous professional choral assembles; cantoring at St. James’ Cathedral, Seattle, WA and St. Mary’s, Anacortes, WA; and playing trumpet in Seattle area bands he went back to school at Western Washington University. He studied with Dr. Leslie Guelker-Cone and Tim Fitzpatrick in the choral department, briefly played for Chuck Isreals in the Jazz department and fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing “Tony” in “West Side Story.
Mr. Walsh stated,”“Already in my brief time at Central Catholic I have been continually impressed by the students and faculty committed to quality Catholic education. Everyday the music department is growing and improving. I am blessed to be part of this of this artistically vibrant community.
Everyone has a 'voice'
Music has an important place in the Central Catholic community and it is expressed in many different ways:
Instrumental Music
A range of Band programs are available from the beginner to the virtuoso. Bands include instrumentation reflective of the interests and skills of the current students - woodwinds, horns, percussion, strings and more. We also feature a classic Jazz Band program, focusing on Jazz in both small combinations and the "Big Band" styles.

All students have the opportunity to perform their music in the appropriate settings - liturgy music at school masses, energetic "pep band" at athletic events and high-end, regional competitions.
Electronic Music Lab
Electronic Music Lab offers students the opportunity to break from the ordinary and develope skills in music production using high-end software applications. Music Lab skills are developed for those who wish to specialize in production and for the musician wanting to branch out further. Advanced options include music applications for film production, live performance recording and more.
Drum Line

Hear the joy. The Central Catholic Drum Line ensemble performs straight-ahead, high-powered cadences and pieces for athletic events, assemblies and outside events needing ENERGY.
Current students, middle-schoolers and adults are welcome to join in the group. A basic sense of rhythm is all that is required.
Concert Choir
Concert Choir is open to anyone with a desire to sing quality choral literature from all eras of music and a diversity of cultural styles. The choir will sing at some liturgy services, regional and national contests, community events, and a winter and spring concert.
If you are not a current student and are interested in Drum Line, Concert Choir or Jazz Band please contact Mr. Walsh for information on joining.
