Bernie Becker 1943

Drafted in June 1943 Faced combat in the winter for 44/45 in the Apennine Mountains in Italy

Decorated for “meritorious achievement in combat against the enemy”-A Bronze Star

Went to University of Portland

Taught skiing at Lewis & Clark College, taught lessons on Mt Hood, became executive director of Sun Valley Ski Club, introduced electric timing, hosted competitions, and international competitions for the US Ski team, French ski team, Austrian Ski Team, and the Swiss Ski Team-

Played on Army baseball team.

Attended St. Mary’s College; University of Geneva, Switzerland; and University of California

Insurance Brokerage in California for 40 years-significant portion covering/protecting 7 ski areas in California

Continues to ski, golf, play tennis, and senior softball

Retired and delivers meals on wheels to senior citizens

George Van Hoomissen 1947

Attended University of Portland, Georgetown University school of Law, University of Virginia School of Law

A Senior judge and a retired Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court

Was a State Representative, Multnomah County for 2 terms

Founding Member of the Oregon Academy of Family Law Practitioners

Past President of Oregon Appellate Judges Association, Oregon District Attorneys Association, and Federal Bar Association

Patrick Gilroy 1950

Student Body President

Attended University of Portland and University of San Francisco School of Law

Began career as a deputy Clackamas County prosecutor

Presided over tens of thousands of cases including Tonya Harding’s lawsuit against the U.S. Olympic Committee and the first murder trial of Oregon’s own serial killer Dayton Leroy Rogers

Retired after 30 years of serving justice

George Kane 1955

In eighth grade his All Saints football team was CO champs, basketball team was city champs, and his track team took first place in the city track meet

At CCHS he played: JV football, basketball, and baseball freshman year

Played 3 years of varsity football, 2 years of varsity basketball, and 2 years of varsity baseball

Won the fastest 100 yard dash runner in the school

Football running back and defensive back and won 22 straight games in 1952 and 1953, Central was state champions both years

For 3 seasons of football his stats were 2,087 rushing yards-25 touchdowns-11.2 yards/carry.  In 1953 he averaged 17.1 yards/carry for the season

In 1956 he played football for Boise Junior College on an undefeated team with 11 touchdowns and 15.4 yards/carry

In 1958 he played football for Portland State University and led the team in rushing yardage-total offense and scoring.

Taught and coached at the Dalles High School for 3 years, then changed careers to aviation as a pilot

He has been on the CCHS Alumni Board for 10 years, President for 2

Joe Weston 1956

Founded Weston Investment Co. in ’57

Opened Portland real Estate School in ’60

Currently owns 133 Portland-area apartment buildings

Founded multi-million dollar real estate empire: American property Management

Currently  has $250 million in real estate holdings

Supports CCHS and many other catholic grade schools and the Archdiocese of Portland

Serves food at St Francis Dining Hall weekly for 10 years

 Established OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation in 1994

Adolph Klein 1956

Started Oregon Right to life on August 22, 1970 in Portland

After graduation, reorganized Young Christian Workers after seeing “how isolated and lonely the young unmarried workers were”.  With the techniques of observation, judgment, and action the YCW initiated Oregon Right to Life

Worked for Oregon Steel Foundry for 10 years, then became a full time farmer, and is now semi-retired but growing wine grapes and cattle.

Continues pro-life work in Walla Walla and for the Republican party.  He is still active in his parish and church work as a Knight of Columbus, Building Fund Chairman, establishing Eastern Oregon Young Adult Group, and helping put on annual retreats

Ray Klupenger 1958

Started Oregon Right to life on August 22, 1970 in Portland

After graduation, reorganized Young Christian Workers after seeing “how isolated and lonely the young unmarried workers were”.  With the techniques of observation, judgment, and action the YCW initiated Oregon Right to Life

Has been in his family nursery business for 45 years-just recently sold the business for retirement

Has chaired many activities in his parish along with being the chairman for two building expansions, fundraisers, and serving the Church Councils

Robert Hopman * 1956

Spent 30 years with the Army Corps of Engineers and recognized for outstanding achievements in Engineering and Managerial work

Passion for humanitarian and environmental work

Expertise in dredging, waterways, and oil spills

Oil spill clean up expertise sent him to Exxon Valdez oil spill and Saudia Arabia to be part of desert storm to clean war damage to oil processing plants

Spent months in Africa in mid-80’s trying to bring food to the starving population

Recognized by several professional organizations-WEDA, WODA, SAME, PIANC

Dedicated himself to local humanitarian efforts such as St. Vincent De Paul and St. Peter’s Parish

He is now remembered at CCHS through the Robert and Matthew Hopman Memorial Scholarship

John Emrick 1960

Chief executive at Norm Thompson since 1981 became CEO

Trustee at Meyer Memorial Trust since 1997

Travels regularly to third world countries

Currently on Board of regents at UP

Engaged in “green” environmental projects

Instrumental in helping John Shepard start The Annual Appeal at CCHS

Lead gift for CCHS Capital Campaign, on Capital cabinet

Amy Lawrence 1991

Member of Central Catholic Women’s Golf Team, Soccer, and Basketball

12 varsity letter winner

1st Team All-State: Golf

Played golf for Stanford

PGA Mini-Tour

Currently teaching at St. Luke’s in Woodburn

Michael Doleac 1994

1st Team All-State: Basketball

Attended University of Utah: NCAA runner-up ’98

Currently plays for the Miami Heat-NBA

Matt Santangelo 1995

1st team All-State

Attended Gonzaga University and was a member of the Elite Eight

Played pro basketball in Seville, Spain
