History

Central Catholic was founded in 1939 by Archbishop Howard  who had a vision to assure a college preparatory, Christian-values based education to students throughout the city of Portland.  Central Catholic serves students of all religious faiths and is the only Archdiocesan high school in the Portland-Metropolitan area.

Our educational approach is “student interest centered” and is framed by the Expected Schoolwide Learning Results [ESLRs] to assure a well-rounded, yet rigorous academic experience for each student.  The ESLRs integrate four major components of development – spiritual, intellectual, social and physical – and progressively ask students to live as a Christian witness in service to others.  Students contribute a minimum of 80 hours of service to the needs of the surrounding community through their four-year career.

The Central Catholic High School graduate is uniquely prepared for success in college and life – and the record of accomplishment and civic achievement by our Alumni is a testament to the timelessness of an education based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Central Catholic operations are managed by the Archdiocese of Portland with essential advisory support from a volunteer School Advisory Council. The Council advises the administration in the governance of educational programs and makes recommendations on policy and direction to sustain high-quality Catholic education.
